Technician II

Full Time

The primary responsibilities of a veterinary technician is patient care. Level I is the entry level and on average takes 3-6 months to become proficient.

Professional, friendly, and informative interaction with both patients and their families during appointments is expected at all times.

Duties Include

  • Taking of patient vitals (temp pulse respiration, ie TPR), and weight.
  • Collecting the primary reason/condition for the family bringing the patient to us
  • Getting a specific history of the condition (how long has it been happening and how often), color or other helpful characteristics (where are they itching, diet changes, color of discharges, etc)
  • Imputing Dr’s notes regarding exam findings, possible diagnosis’s, treatment plan and estimates for proposed services.
  • Holding and drawing of blood and other samples for testing.
  • Operation of various laboratory tests/equipment (CBC, Chemistry, fecal, urinalysis, etc)
  • Taking of radiographs
  • Holding patients for blood draws, IV catheters, and other sample collection procedures.
  • Filling of prescriptions accurately.
  • Administration of both oral and injectable medication
  • Understanding of basic medical protocols (vaccinations, infectious disease prevention)
  • Screening of patients for infectious diseases PRIOR to entering hospital (parvo, ticks, kennel cough, etc)
  • Anesthesia monitoring – knowing what is normal and recognizing the abnormal. The 6 rules of anesthesia.
  • Scrubbing, organization, and sterilization of surgical packs.
  • Basic animal restraint and safety (leashes, muzzles, ID when sedation is necessary)
  • Providing basic health information regarding disease conditions. THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE MAKING OF DIAGNOSIS
  • Maintenance of all equipment is clean, organized and working order.
  • Drawing of blood and placing of IV catheters with a greater than 90% success.
  • Knowing the proper position of all radiographic studies.
  • Anesthesia crisis prevention and what to do if it happens.
  • Induction of anesthesia and intubation.
  • Surgical assist for a variety of procedures
  • Puppy recovery during c-section procedures.
  • Preparation of samples for advanced diagnostics to the mainland
  • Perform technician appointments independent of doctor/client interaction
  • Trouble-shooting equipment/technology issues.
